Vladimir Fedorovich Milovidov (July 2, 1928, Saratov, USSR – February 22, 2007, Moscow, Russia) – Soviet and Russian religious scholar, historian, culturologist, museologist, specialist in the Old Believers and the history of Russian weapons art, an outstanding expert in the theory and practice of sharpening blades of edged weapons. Candidate of Historical Sciences (1955). One of the authors of the „Atheistic Dictionary” (1983), „Brief Scientific Atheistic Dictionary” (1964) and the dictionary „Religions of the peoples of modern Russia” (1999).
Biography
In 1955, at the Moscow Regional Pedagogical Institute named after NK Krupskaya, he defended his thesis for the degree of candidate of historical sciences on the topic „The uprising of slaves in Italy under the leadership of Spartacus (74-71 BC).”

He worked in the Armory Chamber of the Moscow Kremlin, then as a senior researcher at the Institute of Scientific Atheism of the Academy of Social Sciences under the Central Committee of the CPSU, organized in 1964.

In the late 1950s and early 1960s, he was actively involved in the studies of the postwar Old Believers that resumed in the USSR after a long hiatus due to the repressive defeat of ethnographic science, eventually becoming a recognized authority in this area. His monographs „Old Belief in the Past and Present” (1969) and „Modern Old Believers” (1979), which continued this theme, became a landmark phenomenon in Russian religious studies literature.

In the early 1980s, when missionaries and adherents of the “religions of the new century” and mystical cults began to appear in the country, a problem group was created at the Institute of Scientific Atheism under the Central Committee of the CPSU to study modern forms of mysticism and new religious movements. VF Milovidov became its leader. This group included religious scholars, culturologists, psychologists, and representatives of other scientific specialties. The results of the research carried out by the group were published, in particular, in the collection „Questions of Scientific Atheism” (published in 1966-1989).

He was engaged in professional sharpening of edged weapons, collected a significant collection of knives, blades and whetstones. In 2006, the educational film „On Sharpening Blades” was released on DVD (duration – 1 hour 30 minutes; filming and editing authors: Alexey Borzenko and Nikolai Lukinykh).

At the beginning of 2007, about a month before the opening of the next International Exhibition „Hunting and Fishing in Russia” in Moscow (VVTs, February 22-26, 2007), he began to carefully prepare for the author’s master class on sharpening blades on its first day. which was planned to be removed for educational purposes. But these plans did not come true.

In the last months of his life, due to heart problems, he underwent an operation of angioplasty of the coronary arteries, which later caused an unexpected serious complication and emergency hospitalization. On the morning of February 22, 2007, Vladimir Fedorovich Milovidov died without regaining consciousness in the intensive care unit of the Sklifosovsky Institute (Moscow), after a bypass operation had been performed several days before.

He was buried at the Perkhushkovskoye cemetery, on the banks of the Medvenka river (the rural settlement of Zhavoronkovskoye, Odintsovo district, Moscow region).
Scientific worksMonographsMilovidov V.F.
