<br><br>Gordon Clayton (eng. Gordon Clayton; November 3, 1936 – September 29, 1991) – English footballer, goalkeeper.<br>Biography<br>Born in Wensbury, Staffordshire (now West Midlands), Gordon began his football career at Manchester . He was a friend of the famous „Busby Baby” Duncan Edwards, with whom he played for the high school amateur teams, and then for the youth team of Manchester United. In June 1952 he signed an amateur contract with the club, and in November 1953 – a professional contract. On May 4, 1953, Clayton, along with other famous „Busby Babes” (Duncan Edwards, Billy Whelan, David Pegg and others) won the first ever FA Youth Cup, beating Wolverhampton Wanderers in the final match. Clayton played for a long time for the club’s reserve team, making his debut for the main squad only on March 16, 1957 in the First Division match against Wolverhampton Wanderers at Molinho Stadium, which ended in a 1-1 draw. On April 29, 1957, he played his second (and last match) for Manchester United: it was the game of the final round of the First Division against West Bromwich Albion at Old Trafford Stadium, which also ended with a score of 1: 1. In February 1958, due to injury, he did not fly with the team to Belgrade for the European Cup match, upon his return from which many of Clayton’s comrades, including Duncan Edwards, were killed in a . Clayton attended his comrades’ funerals and carried one of the coffins.<br><br>In November 1959 he transferred to the Third Division club Tranmere Rovers for £ 4,000. In two seasons, he played 4 league matches with the Super Whites.<br><br>He later returned to Old as a scout, serving with head coach Wilf McGuinness. Subsequently he worked in various coaching and scouting positions in other English clubs. His last place of work was the Northwich Victoria Club, where Clayton was since August 1991.
